Location

This Illinois Mansion is located on Alby Street, in Alton in one of the highest points. It falls within the Greater St. Louis metropolitan of Southern Illinois.

McPike Mansion History

Mysteries surround this mansion which was built in the year 1871 by Lucas Pfeiffenberger, an architect though it was originally possessed by Henry Guest McPike. Over the years it has been occupied a number of owners till 1950s, after which it was deserted. Brown Business College and Paul Laichinger were the subsequent owners before the Luedkes owned it.

In the year 1980, it was incorporated in the National Register of Historic Places but then for years it was neglected and finally bought by the Luedke family in the year 1994. Efforts to transform it into hotel or commercial property went futile as several issues came up that stopped such ventures from happening.

It has been frequented by psychics and haunted tour groups that take special interest in this eerie building. Intriguing but true that photographs taken here depict uncanny features and suggest the existence of spirits from the lost era.  Among the places where such activities were more pertinent is the cellar.

It was looted of its furnishing, valuables and wooden banisters in the years gone by. Though some of its treasures have been looted, it still stands amidst the modern times carrying a piece of history for posterity to look at it with awe.

McPike Mansion Architecture

This mansion is built in 3 storeys, with red bricks imparting a reddish tinge to the entire structure. It has 16 rooms spread over a huge area and white pillars support the structure in the porch. Set in an area if 15 acres, several orchards and gardens surround the house. There are some rare and unique species of trees and shrubs in these orchards planted by the initiative of McPike, a horticulturist.

Interiors of the building are tastefully decorated and that comprise more than 10 marbled fireplaces, beautiful stairways carved with excellence and intricately designed ceilings. Though it has been robbed off its beautiful artefacts, efforts are being made to repair it.
