McPike Mansion is one of the buildings of historic importance situated in Alton, Illinois. It belongs to the era of 1860s when it was constructed and decorated as a residence of Henry Guest McPike. McPike Mansion History
Mysteries surround this mansion which was built in the year 1871 by Lucas Pfeiffenberger, an architect though it was originally possessed by Henry Guest McPike. Over the years it has been occupied a number of owners till 1950s, after which it was deserted. Brown Business College and Paul Laichinger were the subsequent owners before the Luedkes owned it.
In the year 1980, it was incorporated in the National Register of Historic Places but then for years it was neglected and finally bought by the Luedke family in the year 1994. Efforts to transform it into hotel or commercial property went futile as several issues came up that stopped such ventures from happening.
It has been frequented by psychics and haunted tour groups that take special interest in this eerie building. Intriguing but true that photographs taken here depict uncanny features and suggest the existence of spirits from the lost era. Among the places where such activities were more pertinent is the cellar.

This mansion is built in 3 storeys, with red bricks imparting a reddish tinge to the entire structure. It has 16 rooms spread over a huge area and white pillars support the structure in the porch. Set in an area if 15 acres, several orchards and gardens surround the house. There are some rare and unique species of trees and shrubs in these orchards planted by the initiative of McPike, a horticulturist.
Interiors of the building are tastefully decorated and that comprise more than 10 marbled fireplaces, beautiful stairways carved with excellence and intricately designed ceilings. Though it has been robbed off its beautiful artefacts, efforts are being made to repair it.

Cuneo Museum History
The construction of Cuneo Museum and Gardens began in the year 1908.The construction was halted during World War I, which was later resumed and completed in 1918. Benjamin Marshall, of Marshall & Fox, was the person who had designed this stunning masterpiece. Samuel Insull, the originator of the Commonwealth Edison company was the first title-holder to the mansion. A well known landscape architect, Jens Jensen had planned and designed the gardens of the Museum.
The mansion was later purchased and taken over by John Cuneo, Sr. the famed owner of the National Tea Company, Hawthorn Mellody Farms Dairy and the Cuneo Press, in 1937. John Cuneo along with his wife Julia and two children, John Jr. and Consuela resided in the mansion. This Mansion was later thrown open for the public in 1991 and was known as the Cuneo Museum from then on. The museum houses the family collection of the Cuneos’. In 2009, the Cuneo foundation of John Cuneo Jr. and his wife Herta, gifted their property to the Loyola University of Chicago.
