
Archer's House
Illinois attracts many tourists every year. There are quite a few sites that should not be missed if you ever visit this place. Located in 717 Archer Avenue, Marshall in Illinois, Archer House is the oldest hotel is Illinois. This hotel was built by Col. William B. in 1841. Col. William B., the founder of Marshall, had initially built this house as a stagecoach stop.
Some well-known personalities are remotely linked to this house. Abraham Lincoln, being a close friend of Colonel Archer, always stayed at the Archer House whenever he had to hear cases at the Clark County Courthouse. This is enough to invite a lot of attention. Again, Colonel Archer was also the first Republican delegate to the first ever Republican Convention that was held in Philadelphia. It was at this convention that Colonel Archer nominated his good friend Abraham Lincoln as the vice-president of the United States of America. However, Lincoln turned down this offer for he was not yet ready to enter the world of politics.
Besides Lincoln, Grover Cleveland was another guest of the Archer House. All these high profile connections shot this house to stardom. At present, it has been transformed into a National Historic Landmark.
