Cave-In-Rock Illinois Location

Cave-In-Rock is a village in Hardin County, Illinois. It is located near the Ohio River. The Cave-In-Rock State Park is situated in the Eastern section of the adjoining Shawnee National Forest.

Cave-In-Rock Illinois Directions

Cave-In-Rock State Park is located in Hardin County. To reach the park within northern parts of Illinois, one has to proceed south, on I-57 exiting at Marion on Highway 13 East. Then one has to travel east through Marion and Harrisburg to the intersection of Illinois 1 and 13. Finally one has to turn south 22 miles on highway 1 to Cave-In-Rock State Park.

From the Southern side, one has to take Highway 90 from Marion and cross the Cave-In-Rock ferry and follow the directional signs. From the South East one has to take I-24 West from the I-24 bridge to Exit no. 16 and then proceed 38 miles east on Illinois Highway146 to the park.

From Southern Indiana, one has to proceed through Evansville, IN travelling west on Highway 62 and Illinois Highway 141 to Illinois route 1 and then one has to go 36 miles south to Cave-In-Rock State Park.

Cave-In-Rock Illinois History

The first European traveler encountered the beauty of this magnificent cave in the year 1729. Since then many travelers have visited this cave time and again. The beauty of this cave has found its place in several travelers’ diaries and journals. After the Revolutionary War, this place became notorious for being the hub for criminals. It was the den for outlaws, bandits and river pirates. Samuel Mason, an officer in George Washington’s Revolutionary Army converted the cave into a tavern and named it “Cave-In-Rock”. From this cave, robberies took place.

From the mid 1830’s due to expansion of the civilization and steady growth in trade and commerce, all illegal activities in the cave stopped and heralded the beginning of a new era for the cave. Throughout the 19th century, this place played an active part to serve as a major landmark of Illinois.

In the year 1929, the State of Illinois acquired 64.5 acres for a park that has now increased to 204 acres.

Famed for its notoriety, this place served as the backdrop for Hollywood movies as well.

Cave-In-Rock Illinois Attractions

Within a radius of 25 miles there are popular attraction spot like Garden of the Gods, Pounds Hollow Recreational Area, Rim Rock Trails and Tower Rock Recreational Area. Here one can enjoy by fishing, hiking or picnicking.

You can also enjoy your day by visiting the Hardin County Golf Club, which is open for public during the summer months.

Enjoy the magnificent boat ride at Shawnee Queen Tour Boat. This is one of the primary centres of attraction.

Located within 15 miles is the Hardin County Fluorspar Museum which is a must see for all.

Cave-in-Rock Illinois Activities

The Cave-In-Rock has a number of activities where one can enjoy the day out. This State Park serves as the perfect spot for Family outing or a friendly get together.

Hiking

There are two established hiking trails of moderate difficulty. There are lots of unmarked trails as well for exploration and admiration of the forests and splendid views.

Boating and Fishing

A pond is available for fishing and the Ohio River provides exceptional fishing, boating and water sport opportunities. The river can be accessed from two launching ramps with facilities of parking. The park Rangers and Supervisors provide information on fishing licenses. The rules and regulations for fishing and boating on the river are specifically laid down.

Picnicking

The Picnic areas are provided throughout the park which has tables, grills, water hydrants and drinking fountains. With ample space this State Park serves to be a fine place for organizing a picnic. There are four large picnic shelters for group gatherings.

Camping

Camping Facilities are offered with all the basic facilities of electricity, tents, showers, restrooms and dumping stations. For detailed information one has to contact the Superintendent or the Campground Host. Campsites for physically challenged people are provided here.

Marina

A boat ride down the calm Ohio River will definitely be adventurous and soothing. The “Golconda Marina” situated on the river near Golconda at Lusk Creek will definitely be a memorable boating experience for all visitors. There is a Marina Service and repair, boatlifts, fuel, sanitary pump outs and dry storage. Multiple free launch ramps along with parking for trailers and cars are available. There is a gift shop and a tackle shop. This is a must visit for all who loves to chill out in waters.

Cave-In-Rock Illinois Ferry

The Cave-In-Rock Ferry provides service across the Ohio River between IL 1 and KY 91 at Cave-In-Rock, Illinois. This free ferry is operated by Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. Visitors can cross on the ferry to Kentucky. Once you reach Kentucky you can definitely dine and shop.

Cave-in-Rock Illinois Lodging and Dining

The Cave-In-Rock Restaurant and Lodging has four duplex guest houses. Each Duplex has 8 suites. Each suite can accommodate approximately four people. The guest house has all the amenities for a comfortable stay and the most wonderful part of it is that one can view the beautiful Ohio River from the bedroom window.

Cave-In-Rock restaurant is gaining reputation for fine southern style cooking and has ample of homemade specialties for its guests. The restaurant is open daily from 8am to 9pm.

Very few natural formations are as inspiring, captivating and enchanting as a cave. This mysterious cave is one of the most beautiful tourist attraction of Illinois and a must visit for all.
