Archer's House
Illinois attracts many tourists every year. There are quite a few sites that should not be missed if you ever visit this place. Located in 717 Archer Avenue, Marshall in Illinois, Archer House is the oldest hotel is Illinois. This hotel was built by Col. William B. in 1841. Col. William B., the founder of Marshall, had initially built this house as a stagecoach stop.
Some well-known personalities are remotely linked to this house. Abraham Lincoln, being a close friend of Colonel Archer, always stayed at the Archer House whenever he had to hear cases at the Clark County Courthouse. This is enough to invite a lot of attention. Again, Colonel Archer was also the first Republican delegate to the first ever Republican Convention that was held in Philadelphia. It was at this convention that Colonel Archer nominated his good friend Abraham Lincoln as the vice-president of the United States of America. However, Lincoln turned down this offer for he was not yet ready to enter the world of politics.
Besides Lincoln, Grover Cleveland was another guest of the Archer House. All these high profile connections shot this house to stardom. At present, it has been transformed into a National Historic Landmark.

Steam Engine Museum
Ben Winter’s Steam Engine in one of the cherished tourist sites of Illinois. There is an interesting story behind this famous steam engine. Ben as a young boy grew up with engines all around him. He literally let off steam whenever he wanted to. Ben’s father Martin G. Winter did custom threshing & shedding corn. Ben still uses the historic steam engine & relieves a time when threshing cornfields was the only daylong job. Those jobs required half tons of coals & thousands of gallons of water.
It was in 1981 that Ben began & restoring steam engines, thereby amassing a huge collection of steam engines, so much so that he built a museum close to his house. At present this museum houses fifteen steam engines along with several gas engines & oil engines. This apart, there are also several antiques ranging from Victrolas to Linotype machines. An organ pipe from St. Paul Lutheran Church is also there. In 1991, Ben added two amusement park trains, a diesel engine & last but not least, a steam engine. If you ever visit Illinois, then make sure that you visit Ben Winter’s Steam Engine Museum.

Cahokia Mounds
Another place of tourist interest in Illinois is the Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) named this mound a World Heritage Site. The Cahokia Mounds preserves the most sophisticated Indian civilization north of Mexico within an area of 2,200 acres. The Cahokia city was inhabited from 700 to 1400 AD. This settlement went on become a regional centre that capitalized on trades routes. Evidence of several burial mounds, a horizon calendar known as the Woodhenge has been deciphered through several signs.
This mound also has a visitor’s site that enlightens the visitor regarding the history of this site. There are several exhibits, artifacts, dioramas, models & various graphics. A fine interpretive center was opened in 1989 & an orientation show was started that introduced the visitors to the history behind this place. The aim of the visitor’s center was to expose the neighborhoods of Cahokia, a granary, many mannequins that represent the Cahokian citizens engaged in the daily chores. On visiting this place, visitors are bound to be transported to the past.
